The transformation processes that different organizations are experiencing to adapt and take advantage of the value that digitization and the use of data can contribute to the better management of their internal and business processes are the order of the day and, they suppose, in In many cases, challenges when defining the ideal roadmap for each organization. The implementation of the well-known PERTE del Agua , focused on the digitalization of the management of the integral water cycle, will help to accelerate this process in the companies and operators that manage said cycle and, almost as important as the above, it should serve to set standards and norms that allow this model to be industrialized for export . This has successfully happened with the digitalization model of cities and territories developed in Spain.

It seems essential to establish certain basic concepts that help in this process of definition and transformation. We are clear that technology is not the end, but the Special Data means that helps us face the existing challenges in managing the water cycle ; This will be crucial (on many occasions this has not happened, here is the big risk) to focus decisions on which technologies or tools will best, and in a more scalable way, be able to meet our business needs.

Due to my experience in both sectors, I firmly believe in the similarities that, with due exceptions, both digital transformation processes share, as well as in the interrelation of information and data that both, cities and water managers, will share to jointly solve their needs. . Definition of clear use cases that include the currently existing management challenges, generation of KPIs that help in decision making and, fundamentally, defining the data set or dataseets that will help feed these indicators and make the right decisions . All of this will not be possible without the much-demanded interoperability, not only technical to ensure that the different platforms share information with each other, but also the semantic interoperability necessary so that from both sides the information that is demanded and shared is understood. These interoperability processes should be standardized to guarantee the success of this transformation.

We are clear that technology is not the end, but the means that helps us face the existing challenges in managing the water cycle.
The key role that digital platforms have in making the process defined above viable must be structured by analyzing two levels in their choice. From a functional point of view, the capabilities that these platforms must have to help us manage the data life cycle. Acquisition and processing of data in real time (from IoT sensors or smart counters ), capable of also interoperating with other existing systems in the organization (GIS, SCADAS, ERPs) to extract those data that are currently isolated and that we aspire to store in a large common repository ( big data ), which is also capable of executing processes or business rules predefined by the organization and which can also process this data in a predictive manner , using artificial intelligence algorithms.
